When 81-year old Carolyn Kelly witnessed a friend’s car plunge into a pond near their nursing home, she knew what she had to do. She dialed 911 and then jumped a fence to swim into the 12-foot pond after her friend, 83-year old Nina Hutchinson.

She kept her friend's head out of the water and saved her from drowning in the sinking vehicle until paramedics arrived and were able to pull them out of the water. Fire officials credit Carolyn Kelly’s quick thinking and selfless act with saving Nina Hutchinson's life.
