Black Women's Wellness
Akua Jitahadi
Los Angeles, California

Akua has always been very connected and concerned with family and community. She took it a step further in 1998 when she and 6 friends began a non profit organization, Black Women for Wellness (www.bwwla.com), to address the health issues concerning Black women. At that time, Akua quit her job to devote full time to getting the organization up and running.

Along with taking care of the administration of the organization, Akua spearheaded the Breast Health program. Since then, she has addressed many groups of Black women about the importance of breast health and has showed them how to perform breast self exams. She has accompanied women who needed support to doctors offices and also counsels them on the phone. She is truly dedicated and on a mission to empower women.

In 2002, my sister became a single mom when she agreed to take custody of our brother's 4 year old daughter and her 5 month old sister. Both children were removed from their mother’s custody and Children's Services wanted to keep them together. It has been a struggle for her but, at the same time she is running Black Woman for Wellness, she is also growing and nurturing two beautiful and bright children.
