Juan, a former gang member, is devoted to making sure that other youngsters do not follow in his footsteps by belonging to a gang or abusing drugs. In 1974, he founded a non-profit organization to curb gang violence. In 1989, he had a stroke, ending his career as the Executive Director at this organization.
Although Juan became disabled and has multiple illnesses, he has served the community without any compensation since 1993. He conducts workshops for kids and their parents, and also leads parenting classes. He always stresses the need for education and higher education, and never asks anything in return – except for the smiles and success of the children he has helped.
In spite of his handicap, Juan continues to work to help others free of charge, and has done so for the past nine years. He is a giving man and always makes sure that the needs of the community are met by City and County government, helping to close the gap between police and community.
In addition, Juan has volunteered for the following groups: CAB for City of Los Angeles, Los Angeles Unified School District Real Estate Committee and Boyle Heights Neighborhood Council Quadrant #2.
