Music and Art Therapy for Children in Need
Gayle Cratty
Scarsdale, N.Y.

Through a non-profit organization called Heatsong, Gayle Cratty provides no-fee music and art therapy to more than 230 children with disabilities in the New York metropolitan area.

In 1992, Gayle and Tom Cratty decided to create an organization that would take music and art therapy out hospitals and institutions and into the community. The program began offering solely music therapy, but in 1996, art therapy was added to the program, as well.

The population served by Heartsong expanded in 1998 to include children from birth to teens, and today numbers nearly two hundred forty children with disabilities.

Even though Heartsong is based in Westchester County, parents travel rain or shine from New York City, Long Island, and Rockland County to bring their children there. Heartsong employs certified music therapists, assistants to the music therapists, registered art therapists, and assistants to the art therapists to provide services for thirty sessions during the year to the children in this program. Another important aspect of Heartsong is the contributions of the many community volunteers.
