Sandra Barnhill is the founder of a non-profit organization called Aid to children of Imprisoned Mothers (AIM), which provides services and resources for children whose mothers are in prison.
Technically, the nonprofit actually provides service to three generations: the children, their incarcerated mothers, and their caregivers, who are primarily maternal grandmothers.
Although the agency has been around 16 years, it was hit hard by economic downturn in 2003. In order to keep the agency afloat, Sandra gave up her salary for nearly 8 months. Through her generosity, the organization and its programs survived.
Sandra gets involved in other ways, too. Almost every day, she drives the van to pick up and drop off children. Many nights she also cooks dinner for more than 100 children.
