Rescuing Food for the Hungry
Julia Erickson
New York, N.Y.

Julia Erickson's accomplishments have taken place over the last ten years as part of her role as Executive Director of City Harvest, a local food-rescue organization dedicated to fighting hunger in New York.

Day and night, all week long, a fleet of 15 City Harvest trucks winds its way through the five boroughs, picking up food that would otherwise be wasted and delivering it free of charge to soup kitchens, food pantries, shelters, and senior centers that serve the hungry in New York City. Julia Erickson is behind it all.

When Julia took the helm of the organization back in 1994, City Harvest distributed 4 million pounds of food per year. Under Julia’s direction, City Harvest has grown into a major nonprofit whose mission is well known throughout New York City and beyond. This year City Harvest will rescue more than 18 million pounds of food and transport it to over 800 programs, helping feed some 200,000 hungry New Yorkers each week.

Thanks to the partnerships City Harvest has formed with New York's finest restaurants, some of the city's poorest are able to eat food that otherwise would be wasted. Since September 11, Julia and City Harvest have actively illustrated that food brings life and love to those in need. Less than 24 hours after the attacks, Julia and City Harvest were coordinating food deliveries to Ground Zero. Partnering with New York restaurateurs, City Harvest delivered a continuous flow of nutritious, hearty and delicious food to rescue and recovery workers during the weeks immediately following the disaster.
