Dr. Kleeman realized that many people without medical insurance often develop chronic illness and die earlier than people with health insurance. To help address this, Dr. Kleeman established Maine’s first free medical clinic, the Biddeford Free Clinic (BFC), in 1993.
The Clinic also provides non-narcotic prescription medication for its uninsured patients. With the help of 2nd year medical school volunteers from the University of New England School of Osteopathic Medicine, the Clinic promotes wellness and awareness programs in these areas: diabetes, smoking cessation, diet, exercise, and asthma education. The Clinic has become a teaching facility for the UNE Medical School. Dr. Kleeman’s success has encouraged local businesses, corporations, churches, service organizations, the United Way and private donors to support the BFC.
Dr. Kleeman established the Biddeford Free Clinic while still in private urology practice, and as he served as Chief of Urology at Southern Maine Medical Center, Biddeford, ME. Having retired from private practice five years ago, he remains very active with the Clinic operation in his role as the Chairman of the Board of Directors. The local community welcomed Dr. Kleeman's effort and rallied to his cause. All the BFC’s health professionals and administrative staff are volunteers. Dr. Kleeman has not only addressed the urgent health needs of York County, but also helped other communities in Maine and other states establish similar clinics.
Dr.Kleeman is perhaps that most humble of humanitarian individuals, a man who always takes the time to consider the needs of others. He selflessly started the Biddeford Free Clinic, recruited its doctors, nurses, pharmacists, pharmacy techs, licensed lab techs, administrative personnel, and specialists. Dr. Kleeman volunteered at the Clinic every night it was open prior to his retirement from private practice. He is an energetic, effective, and selfless advocate for patients. Exemplifying the finest in the medical profession, Dr. Kleeman has worked to ensure that all those in need of medical care receive it.
