Like the 19th century epic landscape artist, Thomas Cole, Branden’s love of the environment is rooted in his belief that the Deity is found in Nature. For Branden, working to preserve the environment is more than the realization of his training and career. It is saving the beauty and spirituality found in the natural world around us. Regionally, Branden has worked with the PA Department of Transportation to develop river accesses in highway projects. As Project Manager for a regional nonprofit group, Branden helps coordinate the efforts of elected officials, regulatory agencies, and ecologists to protect the environment.
For example, Branden oversaw completion of three abandoned mine drainage treatment systems, helping to restore 8-16 miles of river area in Somerset County, PA. Branden’s work with regional farmers to evaluate groundwater contamination led to the U.S. Geological Survey offering funds and assistance for the study.
Yet, Branden’s work transcends regional boundaries. He recently completed 6 months of research on potential markets for iron residuals, a byproduct of drainage treatment discharges. His work won praise from the PA Department of Environmental Protection. The research also provided a blueprint for action at a recent and well-attended environment symposium, which drew representatives from business, technology, and government agencies. With federal funding of mine reclamation in doubt, Branden’s research offers welcome solutions to the impact of coal-fired energy on the environment.
Branden’s innovative strategies have achieved numerous goals, from small-scale, renewable energy projects to watershed management. He could pursue a more lucrative career, but he chooses to work toward making a difference in the world. His efforts have revolutionized the thinking of state officials, business interests, and environmentalists by uniting them in their common interests. It is truly inspirational to see a 26-year-old man invest his considerable talents toward the grassroots approach to solving environmental problems, especially in the post big-government era.
