Teaching Kids Values, One Book at a Time
Robert Fortier
Nesconset, New York

A retired Police Officer, Robert Fortier has a dream of making the world a better place for children. Robert believes he can achieve this by teaching children about self-respect and teamwork. To teach these values, he created special cartoon characters, which he incorporated into his newly published children's book, Team Dawg. Robert’s dedication doesn’t stop with writing books for kids. He follows up, visiting schools all over Long Island not only to spread the word about the importance of treating oneself and others with respect, but also to share his desire to make the world a better place. He succeeds by working directly with our kids.

Through his many years of service with the Police Force, Robert Fortier certainly earned his retirement. He could have chosen to spend his time pursuing various leisure activities. Instead, he writes children’s books and undertakes initiatives that teach important lessons about civility and good citizenship. He teaches the values that will help make kids productive and caring adults, but he also encourages and listens to the kids talk about their concerns as well. Robert does this because it is his passion. His Team Dawg characters are fun, too; kids can relate to them in the context he uses them. And the kids always seem to want more.

He has a new children’s book in the works––and if he can obtain the funding, nine more will follow as part of a series. Robert funded the publishing of his first book, It’s All About Respect, listed on the Barnes & Noble Web site. In fact, he began and continues to do all of his outreach work with no outside funding.

Robert always goes above and beyond volunteering on a daily basis to help as many children as possible, creating publications, initiatives, and programs on his own initiative and financing them out of his own pocket. But Robert loves to work with children because he believes that for his commitment and investment in time, the kids will grow up with the values to help make the world a better place for us all.
