My wife Evelyn has been a volunteer for most of her life always helping children. Presently, she serves as Executive Director and founder of Healing the Children Midlantic. In this position, she has been responsible for providing free medical care and services to over 28,000 children, both in the U.S. and abroad.
Through her work, Evelyn has given critically ill children a chance to survive and blind children a chance to see. As a result of her efforts, children have had deformities corrected, and families whose medical expenses are not covered by insurance have received assistance with medical bills.
Evelyns chapter of HTC is one of the largest and oldest in the United States. Children are referred to her through social service agencies, hospital, clinics and physicians. For the first 17 years Evelyn served as director of HTC Midlantic, she received no salary.
Today, Evelyns small stipend from HTC helps us take care of our several adopted and biological children some of whom have pressing needs of their own. One of our daughters was recently diagnosed with cancer and Katie, our last adopted child, has severe developmental delays. Once again, Evelyn has applied her dedication and creativity to founding an assisted living facility called Katie's House. This organization will serve not just Katie, but two other children with similar disabilities.
