Nine-year-old Benjamin Duskin undergoes intensive treatment to battle his Leukemia. Earlier in his treatment, Ben played many computer games and decided that other kids needed something positive when battling their illnesses. When Make-A-Wish approached Ben about having a wish of his granted, he chose to help other kids battling cancer. Ben wished to create a video game that eats cancer cells, and he said it must be provided to other young patients for free.
With the assistance of Eric Johnston of Lucas Arts, Ben spent six months helping to develop an original and innovative video game that provides an outlet for frustrated youths dealing with debilitating diseases.
Bens game has proved so successful that it has become a staple at UCSF Pediatric Oncology Ward. Users have downloaded it over 100,000 times, and the game has since been translated into nine languages. For Ben seeing through his inspiration, the Dalai Lama will acknowledge him as one of fifty unsung Heroes of 2005.
Benjamin Duskin is an inspiration for many, especially the vast number of children who must undergo, are going through, and have survived treatment for cancer. For these children, Ben has not only provided something to keep them positive in their struggle, but also showed them another way to overcome cancer: Helping others.
