Robin Foster-Drain
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Dr. Foster-Drain has dedicated her life to helping low income families. Through her efforts, more than 1,500 children and families receive healthcare information and services via the project, To Our Children’s Future With Health. Founded in 1992, Our Children’s Future With Health continues its outreach and healthcare services for underserved, often disadvantaged communities. Dr. Robin Foster-Drain’s mission: improve the community by providing comprehensive public health services that prepare children and families to live successfully and produce positive actions and changes in themselves and their environment.

Dr. Foster-Drain commits herself to sixty-hour weeks to her mission, overseeing vital healthcare initiatives such as the HIV Prevention Project, the Delinquency Prevention Project, the West Philadelphia Pre-Teen/Teen Project, and even the Youth Opportunities Initiative. In fact, To Our Children’s Future serves as a beacon of resources for over 300 families who seek mentoring, tutoring, and counseling assistance as well as health information and services.

For example, the Youth Opportunities Initiative promotes positive youth development within the context of a supportive, asset-rich community environment for youth ages nine through fourteen. The West Philadelphia Faith-Based Initiative coordinates faith-based institutions to address the literacy needs of young people in West Philadelphia, grades one through six. The Invest In Yourself Teen Program provides year-round resources and activities promoting good health, civic responsibility, as well as finance and entrepreneurship skills for youth ages twelve through sixteen. Among its indispensable services, To Our Children’s Future offers the HIV Prevention Project, promoting education and responsible, life-saving behavior among youth ages thirteen through eighteen. Additionally, the center offers opportunities for volunteer professionals to interact with and mentor young people through the Education Mentoring Program. Yet another program emphasizes the value of learning in a professional work environment by selected student-mentees. GED classes, after-school youth development programs, and a legal resource network all have a place at the center.

Dr. Robin Foster-Drain has taken a health center to an entirely new and comprehensive set of outreach services. Her leadership and vision ensure that To Our Children’s Future With Health addresses the multiplicity of a person’s, a family’s, and a community’s needs to transcend not only historical barriers, but also personal ones as well. As Dr. Robin Foster-Drain often states: “Doctors can make a difference in the life of the person they see in the office, but I wanted to have an impact on a whole community of people.” Due to her tireless efforts, once disadvantaged individuals and underserved communities have found new advantages while receiving the care and nurturing all communities need -- and deserve.
