A fourteen-year-old cancer survivor, Eli Kahn knows intimately the struggle, pain, and fear one must endure in battling to survive the affliction. During his treatment, he made a vow that he would do all he could to help raise monies for cancer research, which could one day provide the cure for and means to eradicate cancer forever. Having survived cancer, Eli has kept his vow.
At the age of twelve, Eli established Cartridges for a Cure, a program through which businesses, individuals, educational, and non-profit organizations recycle their used ink jet and laser printer cartridges. Participants simply visit Eli's Web site, fill out an electronic form, and Eli has supplies directly sent to the clients from the recycling company. Eli receives a check each month for all recyclable cartridges. All proceeds of Eli's initiative support pediatric oncology research at Johns Hopkins, where he underwent treatment for leukemia.
So far, Eli has raised over $23,000. His program continues to grow and thrive. In addition, Eli has become a spokesperson for his cause. He has spoken about Cartridges For A Cure to various professional and medical groups, including executives of the Jiffy Lube Corporation, and a patient and survivors group at Gilda’s Club in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Eli has also manned a booth for Cartridges For A Cure at Baltimore City’s Artscape, and the Johns Hopkins Pediatric Oncology Friends Fall Festival. He has taken his message to a wide audience, speaking about Cartridges For A Cure on television and on radio as part of the Children’s Miracle Network telethon for Johns Hopkins.
Eli is a brave and compassionate young man. He survived his own battle against acute lymphocytic leukemia, and he has made it his mission to help ensure others do not have to endure what he had to at such a young age. As a young cancer survivor, Eli Kahn has emerged as young man with a businessman’s savvy –– and a warrior’s heart. This time he has chosen the field of battle –– raising monies to find a cure for cancer –– and he won’t settle for anything less than total victory.
