Hope Helps Make Sledge Hockey History
posted: 05/18/2007
Athlete. Amputee. Hero. Hope Bevilhymer, Grand Award Winner of the 3rd Annual Volvo for life Awards, has once again helped break barriers for women and the alternatively abled. On May 5, 2007, Hope went to Ottawa, Canada as a member of the American team playing in the First All-Women’s Sledge Hockey Game. The international competition represented the first groundbreaking step in what sports enthusiasts hope will be the next great spectator sport for women. The meet in Ottawa not only demonstrated the hard-hitting excitement of women’s sledge hockey, but also how this competitive sport could – and did – generate solid turnouts and interest on the part of both spectators and potential promoters. Hope notes, “The support by the tournament organizers in Ottawa as well as the tournament attendees was incredible, and the spectators were cheering for their respective countries’ teams.” A goalie for the women’s USA team, Hope faced off against the formidable Canadian competition. At first, the two teams fought to a nail-biting standstill, managing to stay tied for the first two periods during which both teams took shots toward potential goals. But both the goalies kept their teams in play with last-second saves. Finally, in the third period, the US team scored a goal, and then snuck two more past the opposition. Canada’s team fought back hard for a comeback, but luckily for the US team, a strong defense and goalie – Hope – were on top of the game. Throughout the match, Hope prevented the opposing team from scoring, helping her teammates win a decisive three-to-zero victory over the Canadian team. An ebullient Hope stated, “Both teams played a great game, and participants on both sides had a great time.” The two teams plan to play again soon, while continuing to work together to grow women’s sledge hockey in both the US and in Canada.
